-

-
Do you receive government or NHS funding? No—we are 100% volunteer-run and donation-funded. From local events and JustGiving pages to supermarket collections and company charity partnerships, we’re always open to creative ways to raise funds.
-
What bikes do NERVS riders use?Our riders use charity-owned motorcycles, not their personal bikes. Our fleet is made up of reliable touring motorcycles ideal for long-distance work in all weather. We currently run models such as: BMW R1250RT Triumph 660 These bikes are fully liveried with high-visibility markings, custom racks for transporting medical materials, and panniers for added capacity.
-
How do you carry blood and other medical supplies? We use specially insulated boxes mounted to our bikes to maintain stable temperatures for blood, plasma, or platelets. These are securely attached using custom racks. Panniers are used for non-temperature-sensitive items like paperwork, pathology samples, or small medical instruments. Frozen breast milk is transported using specialised coolers designed for the job.
-

-
Can I volunteer if I don’t ride a motorcycle?Absolutely! While many of our members are riders, there are plenty of other roles available. We’re always looking for enthusiastic individuals to join us as: Controllers – Our Controllers work from home using a phone and computer. They dispatch, track, and support our riders from the moment a job comes in until it’s completed. Fundraisers & Events Volunteers – We attend local events, spread awareness, and raise vital funds to keep our wheels turning. Speakers – Experienced members (riders, controllers, or fundraisers) can join our Talks Team to help engage the public and promote our mission. Got another skill or a few hours to spare? We’d love to hear from you! Get in touch at info@nervs.org.uk
-
Do I need specific qualifications to get involved?Riders need a full motorcycle licence and an advanced riding qualification such as IAM, RoSPA, or equivalent. We can help connect you with a local group to complete this training. You'll also attend a rider induction and undergo an assessment before joining operational shifts. Controllers are fully trained by our mentoring team, so no prior experience is required—just good communication skills and reliability. Fundraisers just need passion, people skills, and the willingness to show up and support at local events!
-
Is there a uniform?Riders must wear their own motorcycle safety gear (helmet, boots, jacket, trousers, gloves). We provide subsidised Hi-Vis jackets with NERVS branding for operational use. Volunteers at events are encouraged to wear NERVS-branded clothing to help spread awareness.
-
How much time do I need to commit? We know life is busy, so we offer flexible volunteering. Riders and Controllers sign up for shifts that fit around their own commitments. Whether it’s once a week or once a month, every bit helps. If you’re volunteering for fundraising or events, even just a few hours at a local supermarket or show makes a big difference.
